四代 諏訪蘇⼭(すわ‧そざん)

SUWA SOZAN IV

The first Suwa Sozan was born in 1851 (Kaei 4) as a son of the Kanazawa Domain. After the Meiji Restoration, he studied ceramic art and later opened a ceramic manufacturing business in Tokyo.

He then traveled all over Japan, then returned to Kanazawa again to take up an assistant teacher in the sculpture department at Ishikawa Prefectural Industrial High School.

He moved to Kyoto in 1900 (Meiji 33).

He was invited to teach the large-scale Awata-yaki ceramic manufacturing industry. After six years of working, he became independent at the age of 56 and opened his kiln at Gojozaka.

The current generation is the  Suwa Sozan IV. She is the third daughter of Suwa Sozan III, and her mother was Nakamura Sotetsu XII is the nu-shi (urushi) of Senke-Jyussyoku.


1873 Suwa Yoshitake learns ceramic art from Kanazawa potter Saiunro Kyouzan.
1889 Assistant teacher test for Assistant Teacher, Ishikawa Prefectural Institute of Technology
1892-96 Assistant teacher of the school’s sculpture department
In 1893, he was revived after a major illness, and the number was called “Sozan”
1900-06 Kyoto Awata Kinkouzan Pottery Factory Renovation Consignment
In 1906, he began ceramics production at Gojozaka

          From around this time, he began to produce celadon works
1917 Arrived as Imperial Artist
1922 Torako, adopted daughter of the first Sozan, succeeded the name of the Sozan II.
1970 Suwa Osamu succeeds the Sozan III
   Suwa Kuki born as third daughter of Suwa Sozan III and Nakamura Sotetsu XII.
1998-2004 Ceramic production with Suwa Sozan III, exhibited at the “Nakamura Sotetsu” Exhibition in various places.
2002 succeeds the Sozan IV
In 2004, a commemorative exhibition of succession was held at Takashimaya, Kyoto
