About Niryokai

The Niryokai was founded in January 1968 as a gathering of successors of the Kyoto Traditional Ceramics Artists Association. We were born and raised in the techniques and traditions of Kyoto ware, and while we base our foundations on the “beauty” and “skill” of traditional pottery, we have not only inherited that tradition, but have also studied each other, deepened our friendship, and devoted ourselves to creating. (Excerpt from the 15th anniversary magazine)

The association, which had been dormant after the first and second generation members took over the names of their respective families, has now decided to restart as a new Niryokai by the third generation, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Kyoto Traditional Potters Association.

We will live up to the name of the association, which means to surpass our predecessors, and while inheriting the original ideals and thoughts of our founding, we will work to improve each other’s skills, learn from the past, and have the ambition to open up new paths, in order to embody modern Kyoto pottery.
